About Us
Our founder Charlie Hoffman built his first guitar in 1970 while he was a Ph.D. candidate in American History at the U of M. When he realized that he didn't really want to teach (what else can you do with a Ph.D. in American Constitutional history), he opened a repair shop in 1971 with Rod Bellville. Within a few years he was devoting most of his time to building, and left repair work to others in the shop. Now retired, he built approximately 650 guitars, including two which are now in the collection of the Minnesota Historical Society.

Charlie passed away at 3:15 P.M., on December 4th, 2024. He was surrounded by his family. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.
Gabriel Hoffman has been working in the shop for nearly 30 years, on and off. He built his first guitar when he was 13 (with a lot of help from Charlie!), and his first acoustic when he was 19. He spent the last few years of Charlie's career helping build the main line of Hoffman Guitars, and learning to manage the shop. He looks forward to building and repairing guitars for the rest of his life, and to continuing Charlie's legacy of fine guitars.
